Analyzing BTS RM's Skin Tone in His "Come Back to Me" Music Video, Fan Reactions and Insights

The leader of mega group BTS, released his solo track "Come back to Me" for his second upcoming album "Right Place, Wrong Person on 10th May 2024. The track is an indie-pop genre song that explores thoughts about right & wrong. The MV was directed, produced & written by Lee Sung-jin of Netflix's "Beef". Also among the crew are Ryu Seong-hie, Kim Woo-hyung, & actress Kim Min-ha. Oh Hyuk of the band Hyukoh was credited as a producer, & Kuo of Sunset Rollercoaster joined on guitar & bass. The visuals in the music video had fans, reactors and music critics being wowed at hos immaculate and with an amazing production. People especially loved the color tones that blended so well with the music video and storyline.


As with every BTS music video, fans and non fans alike will always notice things nd have an opinion about said things. One thing that you might not expect from a review of the music video would be RM' skin tone in the music video. The tones give off a mix of golden, bronze, sun set colors that bring out the rappers skin color. Apparently there are some who do not like that RM is presented as having a darker skin tone from the expected almost porcelain white skin tone expected of Asians.


According to The Diplomat, "There is a deeply rooted cultural norm involved with these debates over skin color and beauty. In many societies, and especially in Asia, dark skin has long been associated with working in the fields and, therefore, rural poverty. On the other hand, pale skin is associated with living a more comfortable, cosmopolitan life indoors, out of the sun. Skin color is thus a sign of social class."


Rafael Peña a write for Yahoo! life agrees with this, "The historical preference for lighter skin in Asian culture is intrinsically tied to socio-economic status and the legacy of colonialism. Historically, having fair skin was an indicator of higher social status, as individuals engaged in manual labor often had darker complexions from sun exposure. The elite, meanwhile, enjoyed a sheltered indoor life due to their wealth, which translated into fairer skin."

It is not only in Asia but many parts of the world experience the obsession with lighter skin, even in some African countries, lighter skin tone is preffered to the darker tones. 



Back to RM's skin tone being a point of contention. 


In "Come Back to Me," music video, fans couldn't help but notice the discussion surrounding his skin tone. RM, known for his charismatic presence and thought-provoking lyrics, has always embraced his natural appearance. However, some fans observed a slight change in his complexion in the music video, sparking conversations on social media platforms. While some fans speculated about the reasons behind the perceived change, the majority expressed unwavering support for RM, emphasizing that his skin tone should be celebrated regardless of any alterations. Many fans praised RM for his confidence and authenticity, highlighting the importance of self-love and acceptance.


On various fan forums and social media threads, ARMY (BTS fandom) shared messages of admiration and encouragement, reaffirming their dedication to RM and the entire BTS group. Some fans took the opportunity to applaud RM's message of self-acceptance and empowerment, citing his influence as a positive role model for fans worldwide.


"I saw comments questioning why RM’s skin is dark at the MV or production made him dark and reacting negatively to it. First, Namjoon is not fair. You probably have not seen him in person, but he has this most beautiful dark olive skin. You think he or they (members) are so fair that Korean production always whitewashs them to conform to K's (or others) fair-skinned liking. RM is most beautiful now and ever. The comments are all wholesome and point to the fact that natural skin tone is beaustiful and we should not judge a book by its cover.

At the end of the day we all have opinions and preferences when it comes to such topics, The only important point that we should all have is to respect each individual despite the differences that you may not like. That said, RM's skin tone is divinely beautiful.
