BTS NOMINATED IN 4 CATEGORIES FOR THE E! PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS 2020

 

BTS have been nominated in 4 categories in this year’s People’s Choice Awards – The Song of 2020 (Dynamite), The Album of 2020 (Map of The Soul: 7), The Music Video of 2020 (Dynamite) and The Group of 2020 (BTS). 2020 has been a great year for BTS and ARMY because they have given us something to look forward to everyday, just so that we can survive these dark times. Ever since they dropped their first English single ‘Dynamite’ there has been an air of lightness and a little less stress. With the single, BTS has garnered several awards and we are happy that their hard work and their intention of giving ARMY something that brings hope is being recognized.

The awards season is still on and we are always excited when BTS get nominated. This time they have been nominated in 4 categories that are great and speak volume about the influence that ‘Dynamite’, not only for fans but also anyone who loves music. Lets see how far ‘Dynamite ‘ has come and its achievements. In the US, “Dynamite” debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the group’s first number-one single in the US and their fourth top-10 entry. BTS became the first all-South Korean act in Hot 100 history to debut at number one. The song sold 300,000 units in its first week, including download, vinyl and cassette physical versions. It earned 33.9 million total US on-demand streams and 11.6 million radio impressions. “Dynamite” also debuted atop the Billboard Digital Song Sales chart, selling 265,000 downloads—the biggest pure sales week

On August 30, 2020, the band performed the song on 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. They performed on the Today Show on September 10 and America’s Got Talent on September 16.  “Dynamite” was also performed at iHeartRadio Music Festival Awards on September 18, 2020, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert on September 21. During the first of day of the band’s week-long stint on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they performed a pre-recorded performance of Dynamite alongside Jimmy Fallon and The Roots

“Dynamite” returned to the top spot the Hot 100 for a third week at number-one, aided by its “Bedroom,” “Midnight,” “Retro” and “Slow Jam” remixes, which together accounted for 52% of the overall song sales of 153,000 copies that week

The Song Of 2020

For The Song of 2020. On August 2020, Big Hit revealed that the title of the song would be “Dynamite”. The following day, pre-orders went live for 7-inch and cassette editions of the song, as well as the digital single and its instrumental for US customers; the physical versions sold out within an hour. With 7.778 million first-day streams on the global Spotify chart, Dynamite was the biggest global song debut of 2020

“Dynamite” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the band’s first number-one single in the United States and making BTS the first all-South Korean act to top the Hot 100. The song sold 265,000 downloads in its first week, marking the biggest pure sales week. “Dynamite” stayed atop the Hot 100 for three total weeks.

“Dynamite” sold a 182,000 units in its second week, remaining atop the Hot 100 for a second week, becoming only the 20th song, of 43 songs that have entered the chart at number one since, to debut at number one and spend its first two weeks atop the chart since its records began in 1958;

The Album Of 2020

For Album of 2020. Map of the Soul: 7 was released on February 21, 2020, by Big Hit Entertainment. It is the follow-up to their 2019 extended play Map of the Soul: Persona. The album debuted at number-one on the US Billboard 200 chart with 422,000 album-equivalent units (including 347,000 sales) earned in its first week. It became BTS’ fourth consecutive chart-topper in the country.

Map of the Soul: 7 album was supported by two singles, both entering the US Billboard Hot 100: “Black Swan” debuted and peaked at number 57, while “On” reached number four, becoming the band’s first top-five hit on the chart. According to Dreamus, the distributor for Map of the Soul: 7, stock preorders for the album surpassed 3.42 million copies over the first six days of the pre-order period, overtaking the group’s own record set with Map of the Soul: Persona’s 2.68 million pre-orders. On February 6, Forbes reported that the album had surpassed 4 million pre-orders worldwide. By February 18, album pre-orders had crossed 4.02 million.

The album outsold the next six highest-ranking albums on the Billboard 200 combined. The song “ON” was the group’s highest charting single on the chart at that time and their first top five, following “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey which peaked at number eight and “Fake Love” which peaked at No. 10, making BTS the Korean artist with the most top-ten hits on the Hot 100.

The Music Video Of 2020

For Video Music of 2020. When “Dynamite’ video premiered on 21st August at 12:00AM EST, it garnered over 3 million peak concurrent viewers. It became the fastest YouTube video to reach 10 million views, doing so after only 20 minutes of release, and the most viewed YouTube video in the first 24 hours, earning 101.1 million views and setting three new Guinness World Records. The music video is the fastest in YouTube history to cross the 200 million mark, in just four days and twelve hours after release, and the fastest by a music group to surpass 400 million views, doing so on September 26, 35 days after release

The Group of the 2020

For The Group of 2020. BTS debuted on 13th June and released their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool in 2013. Subsequent work such as their first US Billboard 200 entries The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016), and Wings (2016) helped establish BTS’ reputation as a socially conscious group.

BTS made the Bloomberg 50 due to their “willingness to address social issues, mental health, and politics, despite being in a genre often painted as bubble gum pop”. In February 2019, BTS attended the 61st Grammy Awards as award presenters.  It was their first time attending the event following an appearance by the group at the LA Grammy Museum in 2018.

In April, BTS became the first Asian act to surpass 5 billion streams on Spotify, and Time named them as one of Time 100’s most influential people of 2019. In October, BTS performed at King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, becoming the first foreign act to perform a solo concert in Saudi Arabia

In April, BTS became the first South Korean artist to sell more than 20 million albums cumulatively, becoming the best-selling artist in South Korean history. That month, BTS held a two-day online streaming concert event titled Bang Bang Con, where the group shared footage of past concerts on their YouTube channel.  The virtual concert series, which lasted 24 hours, was hosted in response to Map of the Soul Tour that had been postponed earlier in the year, and was a commercial success.

On June 7, BTS headlined YouTube’s Dear Class of 2020 online graduation event, performing “Boy with Luv”, “Spring Day”, and “Mikrokosmos”. The group‘s commencement speeches highlighted their own graduations and offered “messages of hope and inspiration for the class of 2020 in both Korean and English”.  On June 14, BTS held a 100-minute long online live concert, Bang Bang Con: The Live, as a part of their 7th debut anniversary. The concert was the first collaborative effort between Big Hit and Kiswe, a live streaming solution company in the US. It garnered 756,000 concurrent viewers in 107 countries and territories, setting the record for the largest audience for a paid virtual concert.

BTS have been often regarded as “the biggest boy band in the world”. They have also appeared in various power listings. The most tweeted-about celebrities in the world in 2017 and 2018, the group was included in Time’s list of the 25 most influential people on the internet from 2017 to 2019, featured on the magazine’s October 2018 international edition cover as “Next Generation Leaders,”  and were listed as one of Time 100’s most influential people in 2019. The group was also listed as one of the most influential artists of the decade by CNN, for “popularizing K-pop in the US

BTS also ranked first on the list of ‘Top Rank Global Sustainable Future Leaders’ during an announcement from the UN-sponsored SDG association at the United Nations headquarters, while BTS’ fanclub, ARMY, were noted as the ‘Top Rank Sustainable Global group’.

The group’s influence has led them to address the United Nations at their 73rd General Assembly and to perform before 400 officials including South Korean president Moon Jae-in at the 2018 Korea-France Friendship Concert in Paris, a summit meant to show the friendly relations between France and South Korea

In September 2019, president Moon Jae-in also mentioned BTS in his announcement for his ‘3 major innovation strategies for the contents industry’, stating that BTS has pioneered innovative business models that communicate directly with fans.  In October 2019, The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected BTS as a recipient for a ‘Letter of Appreciation’, for showing the world the beauty of Korean traditional culture (Hangul, Hanbok, Gugak) through creative re-interpretations in their music

In 2020, they were again honored as the youngest ever recipients (and only musician in the award’s history) to receive the James A. Van Fleet Award, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the promotion of U.S.-Korea relations

BTS have measurably revitalized the Korean economy and the global music industry. Credited for the surge in popularity of online purchases of K-pop items and the growth of the Korean Wave between 2016 and 2018 by the Korea Customs Service and Korea Foundation.

Various news outlets coined the term the “BTS effect” to refer to the commercial effects of BTS’ influence, such as when KB Kookmin Bank savings accounts increased six-fold compared to the prior year following BTS’ endorsement and when stock prices of entertainment companies in South Korea shot up for five days after BTS topped the U.S. Billboard 200.  The effect was also observed when companies tied to BTS, such as Netmarble, NetMark, Soribada, Key Shares, GMP, Diffie, and Mattel had their stocks rise.

Data firm SM2 Networks estimated Hyundai Motor received ₩600 billion ($502 million) in promotional results after commissioning BTS as their promotional models in 2018. Signed on as tourism ambassadors in 2017, the Seoul Metropolitan Government credits BTS for the recovery of Seoul’s shrinking tourism industry, bringing in an average of 790,000 tourists to Korea annually, either to attend concerts or travelling for leisure and holiday.

After BTS went to Malta for their show, ‘Bon Voyage 3’, the Malta Tourism Authority reported a 237% increase of Korean tourists visiting the country, crediting BTS as the reason for the increase.

After BTS released their single “Idol,” the National Gugak Center had to expand the amount of Korean instrument sounds available due to increased demand from Korean and foreign producers alike. K-pop idol groups also began changing the themes of their lyrics from love stories to words such as “looking for myself” following BTS’ “Love Yourself” era and RM’s speech at the United Nations.

BTS have a large social influence and as of 2020, have attained thirteen Guinness World Records, including the world record for most Twitter engagements. To date, they have spent 197 weeks at number one on the Billboard Social 50 chart. In October 2018, BTS was awarded a fifth-class Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea for their contributions in spreading Korean culture and language. In 2019, members of BTS were invited to become members of the Recording Academy in honor of their contributions to music and as part of a push to help diversify Grammy Award voters.

BTS has also served as global brand ambassadors for LG Electronics’ 2018 LG G7 ThinQ telephone, and for Hyundai Motors’ 2019 flagship SUV the “Palisade” and hydrogen fuel cell electric SUV, the “Nexo”. Due to BTS’ endorsement, Hyundai received almost double the anticipated domestic order volume for the Palisade. BTS became global ambassadors of the electric street racing series Formula E to promote how electric vehicles can help combat climate change

In 2015, BTS donated seven tons (7,187 kg) of rice to charity at the K-Star Road opening ceremony held in Apgujeong-dong. The following year they participated in ALLETS’s “Let’s Share the Heart” collaboration charity campaign with Naver to raise donations for LISA, a Korean medical charity which promotes organ and blood donation.

In January 2017, BTS and Big Hit Entertainment donated ₩100 million ($87,915) to the 4/16 Sewol Families for Truth and A Safer Society, an organization connected to the families of the 2014 Sinking of MV Sewol. Each member donated ₩10 million and Big Hit Entertainment donated an additional ₩30 million.

Later that year, BTS officially launched their Love Myself campaign, an initiative dedicated to funding several social programs to prevent violence against children and teens and to provide support for victims of violence in partnership with the Korean Committee for UNICEF. BTS donated ₩500 million ($448,000) from the members and 100% of all sales of official goods for the Love Myself campaign over the next two years in addition to donations collected from donation desks installed by UNICEF. In addition, 3% of the sales from each album in the Love Yourself series (Love Yourself: Her, Love Yourself: Tear, and Love Yourself: Answer) were donated to the cause.

These are just some of the few reasons that BTS has become known all over the world. Despite all that, BTS remain humble and continue to preach the message “Love Yourself. Speak Yourself” It all starts with self love.
