BTS Was Named Billboard’s 19th 'Greatest Pop Star' of the 21st Century

In the rapidly evolving world of pop music, few acts have achieved the monumental success and influence that BTS has. Named Billboard’s 19th "Greatest Pop Star" of the 21st Century, BTS has not only revolutionized the global music industry but also set unprecedented records that will be remembered for years to come. This recognition by Billboard is a testament to the group's extraordinary achievements, their cultural impact, and their pioneering role in shaping the future of pop music. BTS’s recognition as one of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century is a testament to their extraordinary achievements and their profound impact on the music industry and beyond. From breaking records and topping charts to advocating for social change and expanding the global reach of K-pop, BTS has proven themselves to be trailblazers in every sense. Their journey is a remarkable example of how talent, dedication, and passion can create a lasting legacy and inspire millions around the world.

"One of the top qualities that makes BTS stand out as pop stars is the members’ ability to bend and blend genres. This is largely due to the group being comprised of different members cast in different roles — K-pop groups will often split different members into a rap line, vocal line, and dance line — giving everybody the ability to shine. They all have their own styles and voices, yet they all blend well together. This individual uniqueness has even led fans to celebrate their “bias” as they connect with their favorite member of the OT7 (One True 7)." Billboard

BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan or Beyond The Scene, debuted under Big Hit Entertainment in June 2013 with their single album "2 Cool 4 Skool." At the time, the South Korean music industry was dominated by established acts, and the prospect of a new boy band making a significant impact seemed slim. However, BTS quickly differentiated themselves with their unique musical style, meaningful lyrics, and dynamic performances. Their early music, often characterized by themes of youth and self-empowerment, resonated with a broad audience. Songs like "No More Dream" and "I Need U" showcased their ability to blend powerful rap verses with soulful melodies, creating a sound that was both fresh and deeply relatable. Their commitment to addressing social issues and personal struggles through their music helped them carve out a niche in a competitive industry.

As BTS’s popularity grew, so did their list of achievements. The group’s journey from a local sensation to international superstars is marked by numerous milestones that set them apart from their peers. BTS has shattered records with their albums and singles across various platforms. Their 2016 album "Wings" was a significant turning point, marking their first album to top the Gaon Album Chart and setting the stage for their future success. However, it was their 2018 album "Love Yourself: Tear" that truly propelled them into the global spotlight. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making BTS the first K-pop act to achieve this feat.

"The group’s dance ability is also next-level. Choreography isn’t new to boy bands, as pop groups from the Jackson 5 to *NSYNC made it a key performance element. But look no further than BTS’ performance of “Black Swan” at the 2020 Melon Music Awards and you know what we are seeing is different here: Often members show off not just hip-hop dance skills, but aerial, ballet, and interpretive dancing." The success of their subsequent albums only further cemented their status. "Love Yourself: Answer," released in 2018, continued the momentum, topping charts worldwide and earning them critical acclaim. Their 2019 album "Map of the Soul: Persona" broke records with its explosive debut, and "Map of the Soul: 7" solidified their dominance in the industry, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 and staying there for multiple weeks.

In 2020, BTS released "BE," an album that reflected their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The album's lead single, "Dynamite," was their first entirely English-language track, and it achieved historic success. "Dynamite" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first South Korean act to top the chart. The song’s vibrant, retro-inspired sound and uplifting message resonated globally, further solidifying BTS’s position as a dominant force in pop music. BTS’s success extends beyond traditional music charts. Their impact on streaming platforms and social media is unprecedented. They are one of the most-streamed artists on platforms like Spotify and YouTube, where their music videos consistently break records for the most views within 24 hours. Their YouTube channel, BANGTANTV, boasts billions of views, and their videos often set new records for fastest views and highest engagement.

Their social media presence is equally impressive. BTS has a massive following on Twitter, Instagram, and Weverse, a platform dedicated to fan interactions. Their ability to connect with fans directly and share their personal stories has created a deep and loyal fan base known as the ARMY. This relationship has been crucial in driving their success and expanding their influence across borders. BTS’s achievements are not solely confined to commercial success. Their influence extends into cultural and social realms, reflecting their role as global ambassadors for South Korean culture and beyond.

BTS has used their platform to advocate for important social issues. Their collaboration with UNICEF on the "Love Myself" campaign, which aims to end violence against children and teenagers, is a prime example of their commitment to social responsibility. Through their music and public statements, BTS has addressed mental health, self-love, and the challenges of youth, making them relatable figures for many fans worldwide.

Their participation in the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, where they spoke about the importance of self-acceptance and youth empowerment, highlighted their role as advocates for positive change. Their speeches and performances at such prestigious events have demonstrated their influence beyond the music industry, showcasing their ability to inspire and effect change on a global scale. BTS’s success has significantly contributed to the global expansion of K-pop. They have opened doors for other South Korean artists and have played a pivotal role in bringing K-pop to mainstream Western audiences. Their achievements have sparked a greater interest in K-pop and Korean culture, leading to increased international recognition for other artists in the genre.

Their influence can also be seen in the collaborations they’ve undertaken with global artists. Collaborations with international stars like Halsey, Steve Aoki, and Nicki Minaj have further broadened their appeal and solidified their place in the global music landscape. As BTS continues to break records and push boundaries, their legacy is already being solidified. Their innovative approach to music, their engagement with fans, and their commitment to social issues have set new standards in the industry. Their recognition as Billboard’s 19th "Greatest Pop Star" of the 21st Century is a reflection of their remarkable journey and enduring impact.

6 of the 7 BTS members are currently serving in the military with Jin having been discharged this year in June, j-hope will also be discharged this year in less than a month in October. While BTS has suspended the majority of its group activities while its members do their necessary military service in South Korea, the seven members have maintained their popularity as solo artists. J-Hope headlined Lollapalooza in 2022, he became the first South Korean musician to perform on the main stage at a significant music festival in the United States.

Looking ahead, BTS is poised to continue their success and influence. Their ability to adapt to new trends, their dedication to their craft, and their genuine connection with fans ensure that they will remain at the forefront of the music industry. As they embark on new projects and explore new creative avenues, their contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on pop culture.

SUGA went on a solo world tour in 2023, touring the world with his solo act in promotion of his debut studio album D-Day. With the release of his debut solo album FACE, Jimin created history when his single “Like Crazy” became the first song by a Korean solo artist to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100. With his performance of "Seven," featuring Latto, Jung Kook achieved his own Hot 100 No. 1 during the World Cup. Successful solo music releases have also been made by RM, V, and Jin.
